Masifundise is a progressive civil society organisation, registered as an independent Trust, with a longstanding track record in the small-scale fisheries sector. We work to promote and advance Food Sovereignty in small-scale fishing communities in South Africa and globally. Our approach centres on empowering fishers and community-based activists to become agents of change within their communities, organisations, and social movements. We also strengthen participatory governance processes, supporting fishing communities to secure their social, economic, and political rights while upholding principles of social, economic, and environmental justice, and affirming the autonomy and sovereignty of civil society.
In support of the organisation’s growth, Masifundise is excited to add a Project Officer for the KZN region to our team. Please read the requirements carefully and only apply if you meet the requirements.
All positions commence 1 March 2026 and are 1-year contracts, renewable depending on performance and the availability of funds.
Project Officer
Masifundise seeks to employ a Project Officer for the KZN regions of our work. We are looking for an experienced facilitator, who is self-motivated and is able to work independently. As a member of the programme team, you will work closely with and report to the EC/ KZN Programme Co-Ordinator.
A central objective of the job is to facilitate and support a range of field activities, working closely with members and leaders of fishing communities, and ensuring good information and communication flow into the overall MDT programme.
Key Responsibilities:
- The Project Officer supports the Project Co-ordinator with carrying out all activities related to programme implementation as per programme workplans
- Provides active support to Coastal Links branches in KZN and co- ordinates their activities as per the MDT workplan.
- Supports democratic organisation building in rural fishing communities.
- Coordinates the activities through the Project Co – Ordinator.
- Assist with building the knowledge and capacity of the beneficiary groups
- Liaises with relevant programme stakeholders as requested
- Maintains a democratic and positive relationship with all programme beneficiaries
- Represents Masifundise at meetings as requested.
Requirements:
- Facilitation, campaigning and fieldwork experience in the social justice space.
- A minimum of 3 – 5 year of relevant and/or related experience.
- Spoken Zulu and working knowledge of written and spoken English.
- Ability to write reports and compile information in English.
- Ability to work independently and to tight deadlines with minimal supervision.
- Ability to work with flexibility in a fast-paced environment.
- Computer skills including Microsoft Office Package.
- A valid drivers’ license and a willingness to travel between the KZN regions.
