Masifundise is a progressive civil society organisation, registered as an independent Trust, with a longstanding track record in the small-scale fisheries sector. We work to promote and advance Food Sovereignty in small-scale fishing communities in South Africa and globally. Our approach centres on empowering fishers and community-based activists to become agents of change within their communities, organisations, and social movements. We also strengthen participatory governance processes, supporting fishing communities to secure their social, economic, and political rights while upholding principles of social, economic, and environmental justice, and affirming the autonomy and sovereignty of civil society.
In support of the organisation’s growth, Masifundise is excited to add an Administrator/ Operations Officer to our team. Please read the requirements carefully and only apply if you meet the requirements.
All positions commence 1 March 2026 and are 1-year contracts, renewable depending on performance and the availability of funds.
Administrator/ Operations Officer
We have an exciting opportunity for an Administrator who is eager to grow into an Operations Officer role over time. This is an excellent opportunity for a fast learner who thrives in a purpose-driven environment and is passionate about advancing social justice. The overall role supports the Operations Manager with carrying out assigned administrative and office duties. Maintains a positive and friendly image by acting as the first line of contact to visitors, partners, and vendors in person, online, and via telephone, and supports the Finance Unit as requested through the Finance Manager.
Key Responsibilities:
- Serve as the first point of entry to the office — warmly receiving visitors, answering calls with a clear and professional telephone manner, and directing enquiries
- Provide high-quality administrative support across units.
- Manage office supplies, logistics, filing systems, and general operations.
- Support HR, finance, and programme teams with basic admin and logistic tasks as needed.
- Assist with scheduling, meeting coordination, minute-taking and follow-ups.
- Maintain organised, accurate records and ensure compliance with internal systems.
- Proactively identify gaps, suggest improvements, and take initiative to solve problems.
Requirements:
- 3–5 years administrative experience in a similar role.
- Strong organisational, communication (written and verbal), and time-management skills.
- Strong written and spoken English. Zulu/ Xhosa will be an advantage.
- A clear, confident, and friendly telephone voice.
- Tech-savvy and able to learn new systems quickly.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).
- Proactive, diligent, and able to work independently with minimal supervision.
- Must have a valid driver’s licence and be confident to drive
- Strong attention to detail, reliability, and a commitment to high-quality work.
- A genuine interest in social justice and willingness to support the organisation’s mission.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and uphold ethical conduct at all times.
