South Africa: Programme Developer to support fisher people’s fight against social and
economic injustices.

Masifundise is an organisation based in Cape Town and supporting fishing
communities to mobilise and organise and thereby become powerful actors at the
political arena. As an expanding organisation, Masifundise has taking its 30 years of
South African experiences to the international level. For almost a decade, Masifundise
has played a leading role as part of the World Forum of Fisher Peoples – a mass based
social movement of small-scale fishers across the world. The fight for social and
economic justice, including the rights of fishers to access natural resources, is at the
centre of Masifundise’s work.
Masifundise is seeking to appoint a person with outstanding communication and
collaboration skills and a deepened political understanding of the root causes of social,
environmental and economic injustices. The key areas of work are close collaboration
with fisher movements from around the world and passionate advocacy work in
support of fisher peoples.
The successful appointee is required to travel frequently. She or he, should have very
good writing skills, dedicated to the struggle against the injustices inflicted by neoliberal
policies, and have experience in some of the following areas:
· political mobilisation and activism;
· policy analysis and production of information materials;
· knowledge empowerment;
· strengthening of alliances and networks;
· knowledge of the fishery sector;
· and advocacy at national and international levels.
Fluent in written and spoken English is essential and language skills in Spanish and
French will be an advantage.

The position will be located in Cape Town, South Africa and South African labour laws
will apply. The position is limited to 18 months with the possibility of an extension.
