About the Organisation
Masifundise Development Trust, established in 1980, initially focused on providing adult education and literacy support to the Black population of the Western Cape. Post-1994, the organization shifted its mission to advocate for small-scale fishers who were marginalized by new fishing legislation in the late 1990s. In 2004, Masifundise registered as an independent trust to support these communities through mobilization, lobbying, and advocacy for legal recognition and sustainable livelihoods. Their efforts, in partnership with Coastal Links South Africa, led to the 2012 adoption of the Small-scale Fishers Policy, granting legal recognition to small-scale fishers across the country. Today, Masifundise continues to empower fishing communities by promoting food sovereignty and social justice, emphasizing self-organization as a means to achieve lasting legislative and systemic change.
