Coastal Links and Masifundise welcome the recent directive issued by the Minister of Forestry, Fisheries, and the Environment, Mr. Willie Aucamp. The instruction to prioritise and finalise all small-scale fishing (SSF) appeals concerning the Total Applied Effort (TAE) in the Traditional Linefish sector by 5 March 2026 is a necessary step.
While we acknowledge the establishment of the timeline, a deadline alone does not provide the clarity required by our fishing communities. The current state of uncertainty is placing immense socio-economic pressure on small-scale fishers who rely entirely on these allocations for their livelihoods and food security.
We call for the reversal of current decisions that limit traditional access. At a minimum, ongoing allocations must continue without interruption to protect the economic stability of fishing households. The Minister must initiate a formal process to review the overall distribution of traditional linefish. This must prioritise small-scale fishers by capping the recreational fishing sector, ensuring that those who fish as part of their cultural fabric and making a livelihood are prioritised.
Additionally, SSF cooperatives are currently hindered by bureaucratic processes. These processes are frustrating and we call for a simplified management system where cooperatives are actively supported in managing their own allocations.
Currently, there has been no clarity regarding the extension of current fishing permits. We call on the Minister to prioritise the immediate extension of these permits to ensure that fishers are not criminalised for trying to feed their families while the appeal process unfolds.
We trust that the outcome of this process will reflect a genuine commitment to the dignity, heritage, and livelihoods of small-scale fishers.
