Masifundise is a progressive, human-rights based non-profit organisation committed to advancing social justice, equity, and systemic change. Rooted in community activism and advocacy, Masifundise supports small-scale fishers and coastal communities in securing their rights to sustainable livelihoods and participation in decision-making processes.

As we prepare for a critical phase of growth and impact, we are seeking dynamic and committed individuals to join our Board of Trustees and help lead our progressive organization through its next chapter. As Trustee, you will play a vital role in shaping our strategic direction, ensuring robust governance, and supporting our mission to drive positive social change. This is a powerful opportunity to volunteer your expertise and passion to a progressive, values-driven organization.

At this point, we are particularly interested in candidates based in the Western Cape, with experience and skills in one or more of the following areas:

Strategic Thinking – Experience in high-level planning, problem-solving, and guiding organizations through growth or transformation.

•  Finance – Understanding of financial management, budgeting, and oversight to help ensure our financial sustainability and accountability.

• Legal – Knowledge of legal frameworks relevant to charities or non- profits, including governance, compliance, and risk management.

We welcome applicants from all backgrounds and are committed to building a diverse Board that reflects the Small- scale fishing communities we serve.

Key Responsibilities
• Attend and actively participate in quarterly board meetings and subcommittees.
• Read board documents and other submissions to the board from the Director’s office prior to meetings to ensure sound and streamlined decision-making.
• Provide guidance on strategic plans, financial oversight, and policy development.

Time Commitment
Approximately 6 days per year, including board meetings, preparation time, and occasional events or strategy sessions.
