Junior Research and Information Officer


Masifundise seeks to employ a self-motivated, independent, critical and analytical thinker as a Junior Research and Information Officer to be based in Cape Town. The Research and Information Officer will work across the three Masifundise programme areas.  As a member of the programme team, you will work closely with and be responsible to the Project Managers.
               

Responsibilities:

  • Plan and execute research desktop and field research activities
  • Collaborate with Programme staff in designing and conducting Participatory Action-Research activities in targeted fishing communities
  • Prepare presentation and research briefs on relevant issues related to Food Sovereignty and small-scale fisheries
  • Collaborate with Programmes staff and partner organisations to produce research reports and related popular education materials.

 

Requirements:

  • An Honours or Masters’ degree in Political Science, Sociology, Social Science, Development Studies, Geography, Fishery Management, Law or a related discipline.
  • A minimum of 1 year of relevant and related research experience. Applicants with relevant experience in research and work in the context of small-scale fishing communities, extractive industries, and Food Sovereignty is an added advantage.
  • Proven analytical and English writing skills (based on writing samples). Knowledge of Afrikaans, isiXhosa and/or isiZulu is a strong advantage.
  • Ability to work independently and to tight deadlines with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to work with flexibility in a fast-paced environment.
  • Computer skills including Microsoft Office Package and web research.
  • A valid drivers’ licence.
  • Willingness to travel extensively to conduct fieldwork.

 

 Media and Communication Officer

 

Masifundise seeks to employ a self-motivated, independent, Media and Communication Officer to join its Cape Town based team.  The Media and Communication Officer will work across the three programmes and, as a member of the programme team, will work closely with the Project Managers.

 

Responsibilites

To design and implement a wide range of communication activities, including media campaigns, related to the sector, the people and our strategic partners.

 

Duties:

  • To design and implement media and social media campaigns on key issues relevant to Masifundise’s work in South Africa and globally (e.g. Extractive Industries, Customary Rights, Operation Phakisa, etc)
  • To develop, manage and expand the reach of Masifundises social media platforms, including Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Youtube
  • To produce and update the Masifundises website and social media with relevant content
  • To manage a mass SMS system to communicate with small- scale fishers
  • To collaborate with Masifundise staff to conceptualise, facilitate, and coordinate the production of branding material, publications, videography, and photography for Masifundise and CLSA.
  • To collaboraate with Masifundise staff on the planning and production of Masifunise electronic newsletter and strengthen its impact.
  • To collaborate with Masifundise staff on the production of quarterly newsletter and other popular education material targeting inland and coastal small-scale fishing communities
  • To gather information from MDT staff, fishing communities and all other relevant actors to produce communication on the developments within the sectors
  • To produce weekly news briefings for Masifundise staff

 

Requirements

  • Diploma, BA in Communication, Journalism, Public Relations, Social Science or a related field or, relevant experience.
  • Proven writing skills in English and at least one other language (Afrikaans, IsiXhosa or, IsiZulu is preferred)
  • Computer literacy (Microsoft Office package) and some layout and design skills will be an advantage.
  • Previous knowledge and use of WordPress and Mailchimp is required.
  • Understanding of the usage of social media for Civil Society organisations

Community Liaison Facilitator – Western Cape and Northern Cape (Based in Cape Town)


As a member of the Programme Team the Community Liaison Faciliatator will assist Project Managers with a range of tasks across the three core Masifundise Programmes. A central purpose of the job is to facilitate ongoing communication between the Masifundise office and fishing communities, to network with relevant local and provincial organisations and stakeholders, and maintain a positive and democratic public presence for Masifundise within fishing communities.

Requirements

  • Strong commitment to social justice and to building a progressive grassroots social movement;
  • 2 years’ experience in similar NGO environment and have community – based
  • Experience in the fishing sector will be an added advantageous;
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills;
  • Ability to build partnerships;
  • Innovative and flexible;
  • In possession of a valid Drivers’ Licence;
  • Computer Literate and able to produce reports;
  • Competence in spoken and written English and Afrikaans is required. One other language competency is an added advantage.

 Project Officer to be based in Cape Town

 

As a member of the Programme Team the Project Officer is expected to assist Project Managers with a range of tasks in fishing communities across Masifundise’s three core Programmes. A central purpose of the job is to serve as a support to the Project Managers on various projects, identify and initiate partnerships with relevant stakeholders and ensure ongoing communication between the Masifundise office and fishing communities. Further to this maintain a positive and democratic public presence for Masifundise.


Requirements

  • Strong commitment to social justice and to building a progressive grassroots social movement;
  • 5 years’ experience in similar (NGO/community – based) environments. Any experience in the fishing sector and / or in Food Sovereignty and will be advantageous;
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills. Conflict resolution and mediation skills are an added advantage
  • Ability to build partnerships;
  • Innovative and flexible;
  • In possession of a valid Drivers’ Licence;
  • Computer Literate and able to produce reports;
  • Competence in English and one other language: isiXhosa, isiZulu and/or Afrikaans.

 

 Administrator – Based in Cape Town

As a key member of the Support Team, the Administrator is expected to support the Operations Manager and Team to carry out all assigned tasks related to maintaining the smooth running of Masifundise’s administration and communications systems and office procedures. The Administrator is also tasked with maintaining a positive and friendly image by acting as the first line of contact to visitors, partners, and vendors in person, online, and via telephone.  She/he will report directly to the Operations Manager.

 

Requirements

  • A minimum of 3-5 years ‘s experience working in an NGO or similar working environment
  • A minimum of 3-5 years’ experience in an administrative position, preferably at senior management level
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills
  • Sound organisational and planning skills
  • Ability to work in a team environment
  • Attention to detail and able to work to deadlines and under pressure to meet agreed upon deadlines
  • Computer literate and able to produce reports as requested
  • Competence in spoken and written English. Competence in one other language (isiXhosa, isiZulu and/or Afrikaans) is an added advantage.
