Masifundise has the following exciting internship opportunities available to expand and assist our operational and programme staff to drive our strategic vision and mission that integrates three national programmatic areas: Inland Fisheries; Coastal Livelihoods; and Capacity Building. The expected starting date for all finternships is 1 March 2020.

 

҉ Media and Communication Internship

Masifundise seeks to appoint a Media and Communication Intern to be based in Cape Town.
 
Responsibilities:

  • Assist with producing and updating the Masifundise website and social media with relevant content
  • Assist the Programme Officers in producing a portfolio of audio-visual resource materials
  • Assist the Programme Officers in the development and production of our newsletter (Fishers Net) and other popular education material targeting inland and coastal small-scale fishing communities
  • Assist in the production Media briefings / dossiers on issues relevant to Food Sovereignty and small- scale fisheries, in South Africa and globally e.g. Extractive Industries, Customary Rights, Operation Phakisa, etc
  • Keepabreast with contemporary developments in these sectors
  • Assist in public relations work, including preparing and issuing media statements.
  • Provide logistical and administrative support to Programme staff

Requirements:

  • Diploma, BA in Communication, Journalism, Public Relations, Social Science or a related field or, relevant experience
  • Writing skills in English and at least one other South African language (Afrikaans, IsiXhosa or, IsiZulu is preferred)
  • Computer literacy (Microsoft Office package). Any design and Layout skills will be an advantage.
  • Previous knowledge and use of WordPress and Mailchimp is preferred
  • Understanding of the usage of social media for Civil Society organisations
  • Decision-making and problem-solving skills
  • Confidence and strong communication skills
  • Be creative and pro-active
  • Organisational and time-management skills
  • Ability to work in a team and under pressure
  • Proven commitment to social justice
  • Possess a sense of political strategy, social dynamics and discourse

  ҉  Research and Information Internship 

Masifundise seeks to appoint a Research and Information Intern to be based in Cape Town.
Responsibilities:

  • Support the Research and Information Officer in the planning and execution of desktop and field research activities
  • Assist the Programme Officers in conducting Action-Research activities in targeted fishing communities
  • Prepare presentation and research briefs on relevant issues related to Food Sovereignty and small-scale fisheries
  • Simplify relevant research and information into text to produce popular education materials
  • Provide logistical and administrative support to Programme staff

Requirements:

  • Must be in possession of, or in the process of completing of an Honours or Master’s Degree in Political Science, Sociology, Social Science, Development Studies, Fishery Management, Law or a related discipline
  • Strong research experience
  • Strong analytical and writing skills
  • Excellent English speaking and writing
  • Ability to work independently and within deadlines in a fast-paced team environment
  • Interpersonal skills
  • Strong commitment to social justice and to building a progressive grassroots social movement
  • Innovative and flexible
  • Competency in IsiXhosa, IsiZulu and/or Afrikaans is preferred
