The AIDC Solidarity Centre in Observatory will host a public meeting tonight to condemn the assassination of anti-mining activist Sikhosiphi Rhadebe.
Sikhosiphi Bazooka Rhadebe, 49, was assassinated in front of his house last week Tuesday by two hit men who posed as Police. According to the Amadiba Crisis Committee Mr Rhadebe was shot with 8 bullets in the head.
The meeting will take place on today, 30 March at the AIDC Solidarity Centre, 129 Rochester Road, Observatory, Cape Town. It will start from 6pm and end at 8:30 pm, to RSVP and for more information contact Dominic on 0214475770 dominic@amandla.org.za.
The killing of the chairperson of Amadiba Crisis Committee sent shock waves around the country.
As chair of the ACC, Rhadebe was helping lead the struggle of Amadiba residents on the Wild Coast in opposing open-cast titanium mining by the Australian mining company MRC.
Bazooka will be buried this Saturday at his home in the Eastern Cape.
82 civil society organisations jointly wrote a statement condemning the Killing of Bazooka.
“The assassination of Bazooka is a painful reminder that from abaHlali baseMjondolo to the Helen Suzman Foundation, there is an existing pattern of criminal attacks on civil society formations, especially those in townships, informal settlements and rural areas.
For years, poor people’s movements in different parts of the country have experienced regular harassment, intimidation, detention and violence against their members. It is worst felt when the media are far away and the victims are poor, black or rural, and when major industries stand to make billions in profit.” said the statement endorsed by 82 civil organisations.
The statement received much attention and now to build on this momentum The Amadiba Crisis Committee cordially invites the public to a meeting so to discuss further solidarity action. The meeting will discuss further actions that should be taken to halt Sand Mining in the Wild Coast.
