Peter Cloete, fondly known as Oom Peter was a fisher from Ebenhaeser – a small fishing community along the Olifantsriver on the North West Coast of South Africa. He was both a fisher and a community leader and took the defense of his communities fishing tradition very seriously. He was a founder member of Coastal Links and also served on the Masifundise Board of Trustees. During the last few years of his life he worked passionately on the preservation of the Olifantsriver Estuary since it was his community’s source of livelihood for over a century.
Soon after his death at sea on 14 April 2010, Coastal Links took a decision to honor is life by establishing a relief fund in his name. The Peter Cloete Relief Fund aims to assist families of Coastal Links members who face destitution after the untimely death of the breadwinner at sea. By donating to the Peter Cloete Trust Fund, you become a member of the Fund.
Final plans are being made for the implementation of this fund.
