Hurricanes, pollution dent fishing industry

Jamaica’s fishing and small-scale fishing industry is in a serious crisis, due to hurricanes, pollution, depletion of the fishing resource, over-fishing, illegal fishing, and outdated legislation that governs the industry.

Jamaican small-scale fishers need to know when appropriate policy and legislation to guide the sustainable development of the industry will be discussed with industry roleplayers, adopted and implemented.

Jamaica needs the commitment, determination and the resources to ensure that proper enforcement, technical support, and public education are used to guide the sustainability of the industry.

There are approximately 30,000 fisher folks directly involved in the industry, 90 per cent are artisanal or small scale-fishermen.
