Objectives of the Project
The project targeted poor, rural coastal and fisher communities in the Western Cape, and to a lesser extent, those in the Eastern Cape, with the aim of:
Raising the awareness of poor rural traditional fishing and coastal communities about their constitutional rights and fundamental rights as contained in the Bill of Rights;
Raising the awareness of poor rural traditional fishing and coastal communities on how the system of justice, using litigation as a tool, can be used to protect and promote their fundamental rights;
Building the confidence and capacity of poor rural traditional fishing and coastal communities to engage with the justice system in claiming their fundamental rights;
Building support for the coastal communities in their struggle to realise their human rights to sustainable livelihoods
